Satan Has Had Lots of Practice

I’ve been a Christian for 31 years, and I still hear and read and learn new things from the Bible on a regular basis.

Sometimes, truths are completely new. And other times, there are things that I hear that are phrased in such a way that my imagination works overtime to fill in the blanks.

In a recent sermon, Derek Holmes at LBT said something in a way that I hadn’t thought about before. Our church is going though a study of the book of James on Sunday mornings. Preaching from James 1, Derek stated that the Devil used to be the lord of our flesh, so he is well versed in how to tempt us.

I never really thought about that!

I have often heard it said that Satan wastes no arrows. He knows how to tempt us, when to tempt us… what will work and what will not. We are studied by the demonic realm, looking for any resource with which to trip us up. But the point Derek was making is that Satan can also refer to when he was our sole influence. He can’t read minds, but he can read our actions and hear our words, and has had millennia to practice.

Is any of this good news? No.  But I am thankful that there is always more to learn from the Bible. This truth is a reminder that we should always be on guard. Never shrink. Never back down from what is right. Never let Satan get a foothold.

Because he won’t be content to stop there.

  1. What a great blog, such truths! It happened to catch my eye because I just began my own blog last week regarding how to overcome the nutritional challenges Christians face and to become a new creation through God’s wisdom. We are to strive for excellence not perfection. I’ll continue reading – thanks for writing, E

  2. Sounds like a paranoid conspiracy theory to me. Satan doesn’t exist and God doesn’t exist. And trust me, as someone who has left Christianity, it’s a lot better being sane than it is being a Christian.
