Behind the Curtain: New Favorite

My new favorite productivity technique: get outta the office (my situation is not nearly as bad as Dilbert’s. I just like Dilbert).

Lately, I am taking more and more opportunities to do my worship planning on the move. No computer. No office. Here’s how…

My planning revolves around a few items: my Bible, Planning Center, the Resource and Planning Edition of LifeWay‘s Worship Hymnal, and an Excel spreadsheet of our song library.

I developed the Excel spreadsheet when I first started planning worship a few years ago. I needed a way to ensure that no songs were repeated too often, and the spreadsheet evolved into a vital part of my planning workflow. I filter out all songs that have been sung within a six-week time frame and plan with the songs that are left.

To go mobile with this, I print out the spreadsheet, tuck it in my Moleskine, grab the other items, and find a private table somewhere. With the distractions of my office and computer gone, I can concentrate on the task at hand.

When I get back to my office, I enter the songs into Planning Center. Done! I’m hooked.
